BRACE DENTAL CLINIC : Dental Emergency Care
A dental emergency can range from a knocked-out tooth and a lost dental crown to broken dental braces or extreme tooth or jaw pain or facial muscle pain. Basically, it is a dental situation that requires immediate emergency dental attention.
While the problem may be minor, dental pain often indicates a serious underlying tooth disease or pathology that requires immediate attention. Toothache or tooth pain is caused when the nerve root of a tooth is irritated or inflammed. Dental (tooth) infection, tooth decay, tooth injury, dental abscess, gum disease, periodontal disease or loss of a tooth are the most common causes of dental pain. Pain may also occur after an extraction of the tooth. It could also sometimes originate from other areas and radiates to the jaw (jaw pain), thus appearing to be tooth pain and is known as referred pain. The most common areas include the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), ear pain, sinusitis and on very rare event an occasional heart problems.
Dental pain or Toothache and jaw pain are common complaints. There may be severe pain to pressure, or to hot or cold stimuli. The pain may persist for longer than 15 seconds after the stimulus is removed. As the area of inflammation increases, the pain becomes more severe. It may radiate to the cheek, the ear, or the jaw.A toothache needs to be differentiated from other sources of pain in the face. Sinusitis, ear or throat pain, or an injury to the temporomandibular joint(TMJ) that attaches the jaw to the skull may be confused with toothache. Pain from a deeper structure (called referred pain) may be passed along the nerve and be felt in the jaw or tooth.
For most common causes of toothache, the prognosis is good with appropriate dental care. Following good dental hygiene, such as brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and routine check-ups by the dentist, helps to prevent dental problems.
